Three counties, three very different records

Figures are from NOAA's Storm Events Database for 2016 through 2025. Weld County's 106 reports of hail at 1.75 inches or larger are more than Larimer and Boulder combined. Larimer, by contrast, shows up more often for water: the same database lists 29 flash floods there in those ten years.

Weld County and Greeley

• June 12, 2017. Hail of 4.25 inches at Pierce is the largest the database records in Weld County during the decade.
• July 13, 2023. Stones of 3.25 inches near Stoneham left significant agricultural damage across a swath roughly 4 miles by 4 miles.
• June 7, 2021. An EF2 tornado near Firestone cost several homes their windows and roofing material; one lost an entire wall and most of its roof.
• May 22, 2008. A tornado rated EF3 touched down northeast of Platteville and tracked nearly 39 miles to west-northwest of Wellington, at times up to a mile wide. The record lists one death, 78 injuries and $147 million in damage, and FEMA declared DR-1762 for Larimer and Weld counties.

Larimer County: Fort Collins and Loveland

The database's largest Larimer County stone from 2000 through 2025 is 4 inches at Buckeye on August 3, 2013, where the narrative describes extensive damage to homes, automobiles, trees and crops. More recently, 2.5-inch hail fell at Wellington on June 17, 2025. On June 4, 2015, an EF3 tornado moved from Boulder County into Larimer County, and the record for that segment says at least 25 homes between Longmont and Berthoud were damaged and three destroyed.

Boulder County

Boulder County's biggest hail day in the decade was June 18, 2018, with 3-inch hail at Superior and 2.5-inch hail at Lafayette. A year later, Louisville logged 2.5-inch stones on July 5, 2019. The county's most recent FEMA major disaster declaration in this data, DR-4634, covers the wildfires and straight-line winds that began December 30, 2021.

What Fort Collins requires of roofers

The City of Fort Collins contractor licensing page says all contractors working in the city need a license, with exceptions for owners working on their own single-family residence (with conditions) and certain small projects that do not need a permit. It offers two roofing licenses:

• Roofing covers nonstructural roof coverings on roofs of at least 2:12 pitch, including sheathing repair or replacement, but not flat or low-slope systems.
• Roofing(+) covers the same work and adds flat and low-slope roof systems.

Both require an ICC certification and verification of three completed roof projects. If your house has a low-slope section, such as a porch or addition, ask which of the two licenses the company holds.
